Cooking Up Colour by Sania Pell and Beth Evans

Earlier in the year I worked with Beth Evans on this colour story. I had been styling a lot of food and tabletop shoots and this influenced the story and led to using Nature Paint‘s powdered paint products. The act of mixing the paint became similar to cooking and baking. We decided to make the story pale and neutral – the soft colours of pastel confectionary, sugared almonds, pale pinks sitting next to tangerine and aubergine. Soft whites like meringue, whipped from powder into paint. I made little dishes, bowls and discs from air-drying clay that I could paint in the pale tones and food was used to prop the story and create an ambiguity between the processes.

We created a short Issuu publication to show the images. Please click to view it full screen.

We hope you enjoy it.

Thank you to Nature Paint for providing the paint for this story. Find out more about their ethos and colour range on the Nature Paint website.

  1. Hi Sania

I have been a follower of your work for some time and love what you do, so I was delighted to see you writing about Nature Paint. We have just opened a shop this summer in Porthleven, Cornwall and I was very keen to stock Nature Paint, my experiments with it have been mainly furniture based and all very successful it is a lush product and a local company to. We have lots of photos if you would like to see them, I have sent you a f.b. link above or we have a blog – but in truth I am shocking at all pro mo stuff! lovemiatextileartist.wordpress.com
I don’t normally contact people so I hope this is ok.

What a great idea-natural paints. I think the context is exactly right as people are taking more care over the products they use in their homes. I can’t wait to visit their site.
    Thank you for the info.
